On November 8th, 2016, it was reported to the Placer County Department of Environmental Health that the popular Squaw Valley Ski Resort in Olympic Valley, California had traces of coliform and E.coli bacteria in the upper mountain’s drinking water. Since the issue was detected, the water has been consistently treated and has shown improvement. The Director of Placer County Environmental Health, Wesley Nicks, has said that three of four wells located on the upper mountain that serve Squaw Valley are not showing signs of any dangerous bacteria. To not pose any risks however, all restaurants at the top of the mountain are closed and skiers have been warned to not consume any water there. Skiing from the top to the bottom of the mountain is still permitted however.
The Public Relations Director for Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, Liesl Kenney, issued a statement on November 30th regarding the water conditions on the upper mountain. It was determined to be an isolated incident. Squaw Valley will not return to normal functions on the upper mountain until the Placer County Environmental Health officials have given the all clear. Any guests that are staying on the upper mountain of Squaw Valley still have access to water and facilities, and the resort is providing bottled water for drinking at no additional cost.
