i can't read a book without romance
By - nuumilk
If you want another series with good romanced recommend Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins, amazing series and one of my favorites!
But I’d you want something without romance the Enders game by Orson Scott Card is amazing! Either way you’re set!
thank you for the recommendations! i’ll definitely look into them! ^^
Both are really worth your time and mist reads anyway! Hope you enjoy! 😊
Have you read Kushiel's Dart?
no i have not! i’ll check it out though !
such a great series. very heavy on the character building, heaps of romance, intrigue...
I'm kind of the same. I don't need it to be the focus, but I love very few books with zero romantic relationships. Wuthering Heights does have romance though so not sure I understand the link.
I generally prefer male lead characters as well and struggle with female narratives especially. I feel a bit guilty for it but it's just a preference.
I don't think it's an attention span issue but just a preference. I personally don't like reading 1st person narratives, but have taken to some. Maybe it's the same with you and you just haven't found a book without romance that you like yet. Sometimes tastes change too with time. Anyway, if you never do, it's nothing to be ashamed about. We all like different things.
you make a good point. i just feel like it’s a weakness that i can only read books with romance, because i’ll be going into uni next year and i cannot for the life of me just sit down and read a book that analyzes the human mind or history, or whatever else. maybe i’ll learn to adapt. hopefully…
If you're worried about mandatory reading for uni, it's going to be a slog, ngl. There's not a lot of time to enjoy the readings even if you do like them, so it's all really reliant on breaking it down to manageable chunks for note-taking and time management skills. It's a learned skill for sure with class reading, but it just takes practice and applied routine.
that makes a lot of sense then if it’s just a skill i have to work on! i’ll do my best so i can keep enjoying my romance novels then (๑⃙⃘⁼̴̀◡ु⁼̴́๑⃙⃘)
You hit the nail on the head with this post I am exactly like that! When I was young I enjoyed the adventure and fantasy genres the most just because well it'swhat I knew and enjoyed. I then read "the legacy of the key" by S.L Morgan. Which has fantasy and is the beginning of a love story. Enjoyed it like I haven't enjoyed a book yet and I realised it was because of the romance . Since then I have read tons of books in the romance/adventure/ paranormal genre and I completely agree. To me these days if romance isn't involved it just seems dull. Glad to know it isn't just me.
i also think it’s nice to know i’m not alone on this! ヾ(´▽｀*;)ゝ”
yes exactly! when i first had my taste of romance it felt so new and like i’d been enlightened. and i totally agree, it just feels like something is missing when there isn’t romance. and i feel like rather than overshadowing, romance tends to add a bit of spice to a story, you know? like extra layers. especially when it’s well done!
Agreed! Don't know if you are like this when it comes to movies and series. I used to be very much into romance anime especially because sometimes the love stories are so cute! If you want awesome romance in series start watching k-drama. They have tons of series with fantasy romance and suspense! Although they get cheesy at times
i’m like this with everything… YES!! i have watched so many kdramas for that reason, actually. they do such a good job of adding romance to plots about history, crime, or even just everyday life. i also read korean comics (manhua) and some of their novels and the writers over there are so talented honestly… i dont know how they have so many creative ideas and the capacity to spin such interesting stories!
Glad you watch it too!!! I love kdrama so much. These days I enjoy romance and suspense. So don't worry about enjoying romance more than anything else its just our preference
yess i also love it when there’s a bit of suspense! i personally love a historical or supernatural element. it’s always nice to see how a writer can add unique twists to these genres! and yeah you and another commenter have helped me to understand that it’s just what i like and i shouldn’t feel insecure about it! so thank you for that (ृ ु ´͈ ᵕ `͈ )ु
British movies and "classics" are also great if you haven't watched it. Like pride and prejudice or North and south
i have watched pride and prejudice but not north or south! i will check it out!
Ironic you mentioned Wuthering Heights because it's one of the best love stories of all time. It is tragic though. How far in are you?
Polybius and his love of Rome in The Histories is the best love story of all time.
is that really so?? im only 20 pages in…
Yes, definitely. But it's also romance mixed in with a lot of trauma. I'd say stick with it if you're a fan of "tragic star crossed lovers" stories, don't if the main thing you like about romance is the happily ever after. You may just be finding the old fashioned language and "story within a story" framing device frustrating right now, I'd say stick with it and you will be rewarded.
